North Deering is a large residential neighborhood on the northeastern edge of Portland, bordered on the west by train tracks, and on the east by the town of Falmouth. It was first developed a street network in the early 19th century. My only issue with this area (as a resident), is that there’s not much to walk to. Well, this is a bit of a subjective question, but I’ve decided to document some areas and give you a better understanding of the majority of the neighborhoods in Portland. Local art lines the walls, and more than 100 wine bottles are stocked in the cellar. It is full of historic homes, little shops and coffee houses, and the MAX light rail runs right through it. The most important thing you need to know about living off the peninsula is that the “quality” of the area (and homes) tends to happen off the main roads. If you live here, don’t expect to walk to a lot of restaurants, coffee shops, etc (I don’t see any in the nearby radius). I lived in Boston (Somerville) for a few years, and I like Portland so much more. So, bring the kiddos and let them explore the grounds, fly a kite, or picnic by Deering Oaks Park’s own public pond. It is bordered by Franklin Street on the west, Washington Avenue on the east, to the north by Marginal Way, and the south by Congress Street. Feel like a part of the community as you stroll through side streets that give off a uniquely New England flair with overhanging trees, lush private gardens, and excellently restored 19th century brick homes with climbing ivy and original iron fencing. Like I mentioned before, if you’re looking to live in the most desirable part of Portland, the peninsula is probably where you should start. With all this out of the way, there are some cool spots here: Like I said, there are some good spots, but there’s a lot of traffic through here to contend with.
